Individuals Stopping Anti-Obesity Injections Put On Pounds Far More Rapidly Compared to Those on Conventional Diets

Obesity treatment involves ongoing approaches.

A recent study reveals that people who discontinue blockbuster GLP-1 drugs like Mounjaro or Wegovy tend to recover lost weight at a significantly accelerated pace than those who halt conventional diet and exercise regimens.

Published data in a prominent medical journal shows that while obese individuals can lose about a fifth of their body weight while using the jabs, the weight returns at an estimated rate of nearly a kilo each month once they quit.

"Individuals buying these medications must be cognizant of the danger of fast rebound weight gain when the therapy is stopped," warns expert Dr. Susan Jebb.

Such speed of regain means a reversion to original weight within about 18 months.

Comparing Treatments

The analysis, which looked at 37 of studies involving over 9,000 of participants, contrasted the effects of these new drugs with older methods.

Scientists emphasize that people who lose weight through lifestyle changes alone usually have a more gradual weight regain—around 0.1 kg a month—once they finish.

The Reason for the Fast Rebound

Experts suggest the mode of action of the drugs accounts for the heightened rebound.

The injections imitate a natural hormone called glucagon-like peptide-1, which controls appetite.

"Sustained high doses of GLP-1 concentrations far above than normal might result in the body to produce less of its own natural hormone, and could diminish sensitivity to its actions," said Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition specialist.

"Stopping of this hormone supplement means appetite is uncontrolled, making binge eating much more probable."

A Lifelong Condition?

The NHS suggest the jabs for people with weight-linked health risks, accompanied by prescribed diet and exercise modifications.

Professionals contend that, considering the significant potential of weight regain, the therapy is often long-term.

This perspective is reinforced by drug manufacturers, who say that the findings "underscore the persistent nature of excess weight," akin to managing conditions like diabetes.

Patient Testimonies

People who have come off the jabs describe a sudden resurgence of cravings.

"It was like a switch flipping and I was suddenly extremely hungry," recalled an individual.

This difficulty is compounded if individuals have not adopted lasting dietary or behavioural modifications during treatment.

Significant Use

Recent estimates suggest that a significant number of people in the UK have used these injections in the last 12 months, with demand continuing to grow.

  • Adoption is higher among women than males.
  • The middle-aged age group shows the highest usage rates.
  • Many obtain the medications through private healthcare rather than the NHS.

In conclusion, clinicians stress that while GLP-1 drugs are effective agents for shedding pounds, they are not a magic fix and lasting health benefits hinges on integrated behavioural support.
