The EU could “act quickly and firmly” against what it deems “unjustified” visa bans imposed by the United States against five European individuals working on fighting digital hatred and misinformation, a European Commission spokesperson stated.
EU Officials Condemn US Action as ‘Coercion’
Officials from Europe including the French president charged the US administration of “bullying and threats”, after the travel bans targeted individuals that were at the heart of efforts to introduce laws regulating American tech companies.
“For too long, ideologues in Europe have spearheaded coordinated campaigns to pressure US companies to punish American viewpoints they disagree with,” wrote the US secretary of state online. “This government will not stand for these egregious acts of extraterritorial censorship.”

Nations including Germany, Spain, and the UK, alongside numerous EU representatives joined France in criticizing the decision.
The bans were enacted this week on an ex-European commissioner who helped draft the bloc’s Digital Services Act (DSA), along with several anti-disinformation campaigners, from two in Germany and two in the UK.
